Making Your Browser Work With IBM Lotus Sametime

To make your browser work with IBM® Lotus® Sametime®:

  • Ensure that your browser meets the Lotus Sametime requirements listed in the IBM® Lotus ® Sametime® Release Notes.
  • Ensure that your browser is enabled to accept cookies. Cookies are small files that Lotus Sametime stores on your computer. These files tell Lotus Sametime that you are authorized to attend certain meetings. For example, If your browser does not accept cookies, you cannot attend password-protected meetings. For Microsoft® Internet Explorer, click Tools - Internet Options and click the Privacy tab. Select to allow all cookies. For Mozilla® Firefox®, click Tools - Options; click Privacy, then click the Cookies tab and select Allow sites to set cookies.
  • Ensure that the following options are enabled in your browser's preferences:
    • JavaTM
      Windows
      If Java is installed, you will have a Java control panel. (On the Macintosh, Java comes with the operating system, already installed.).
      Through the Java control panel, select the Advanced tab -- <APPLET> tag support. Check Internet Explorer -- it does not need to be checked for Mozilla and Netscape.

      Internet Explorer 6.x and 7.x
      Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab of Internet Options -- ensure Sun Java is checked.
      If it was not checked, the browser needs to be restarted after checking this box.

      Firefox 1.5 and 2.0
      Tools - Options -- on the Content tab, check enable Java.

      Firefox 2.0 on Linux
      Edit - Preferences -- on the Content tab, check enable Java.

      Mozilla 1.7.12 and higher
      Edit - Preferences. In the Advanced section, check Enable Java.

      Safari 2.0 on Macintosh
      Safari - Preferences. Security, check Enable Java.
    • JavaScriptTM
      Internet Explorer 6.x and 7.x
      Tools - Internet Options. Click the Security tab, select the Internet zone, and then click Custom Level. Scroll to Scripting - Active Scripting and check Enable. Click OK.

      Firefox 1.5 and 2.0
      Tools - Options -- on the Content tab, check enable JavaScript.

      Firefox 2.0 on Linux
      Edit - Preferences -- on the Content tab, check enable JavaScript.

      Mozilla 1.7.12 and higher
      Edit - Preferences. In the Advanced section, select Scripts and Plugins, and check Enable JavaScript.

      Safari 2.0 on Macintosh
      Safari - Preferences. Security, check Enable JavaScript.
  • You might need to configure your browser to use a proxy server. If so, obtain the server name and port number from your system administrator, and then set up your browser to use the proxy server. Consult your system administrator before changing any proxy settings.
  • Ensure that you have Java Sun® or IBM® version 1.4.2, 1.5, or 1.6 installed. To determine whether you have Java installed, and what version you have, for Microsoft ® Internet Explorer, for example, click Tools - Internet Options, and then click Advanced. For other Microsoft® Windows®-based browsers, check the Java Control panel.
  • To install the correct version of Java, go to the Sun Microsystems Web site at http://www.java.com.

  • If your browser is set to block pop-ups (new browser windows that automatically open, for example, to display advertisements), some Meeting Room functionality may be prevented from working. As a result, it is best to turn off pop--up-blockers while working with meetings. For example, in Internet Explorer, click Tools - Pop-up-Blocker - Turn Off Pop-up Blocker to allow pop ups to appear. For Firefox®, click Tools - Options and then click Web Features. Clear Block Popup Windows. You may have also have a product installed to that blocks pop-up windows (such as Google Toolbar). If so, see that product's documentation for information on allowing pop-ups for a particular Web site. Once you allow pop-ups for the server that runs your meetings, you will have access to all meeting room functionality.
  • If your browser is not correctly set for Lotus Sametime, you receive errors when you test a meeting or attend your first meeting.
